What Gmail Labs Can Do For You

Gmail, Settings: Labs

On Thursday, Google added a "Labs" tab to Gmail for users in the US and the UK. Like Google Labs, which allows users to play beta tester for various not-ready-for-prime-time products, Gmail Labs features add-ons for Gmail. Google hopes that you'll tell them what you like by giving feedback, and they'll also figure it out simply by measuring usage. So what fun stuff has Google graced our email with? Well, among my favorites (ie things I might actually use):

Quick Links - A new way of bookmarking Gmail views. Simply navigate to desired email view, click "Add Quick Link" on the left side of Gmail in the "Quick Links" box, give the view a name, and see your convenient bookmark in the box.

For instance, do a search in your messages for a specific keyword, and after you get the search results, bookmark that view. Use Gmail's shorthand to search for other views. Type l:^u l:^i into the search box and get messages that are unread and in your inbox. Then bookmark as before. (To use Gmail shorthands, simply use l to represent "label" followed by a colon and then the two character shorthand to represent what you're looking for: Unread Messages ^u, Inbox ^i, Starred Messages ^t, Chats ^b, Drafts ^r, Spam ^s, and Trash ^k. Mix and match as needed.  read more »
